Guidelines for Buying and Selling Foreign Currency in India

  • Only Resident Indians are permitted to purchase foreign currency for foreign travel purposes.
  • Foreign currency can be carried as cash or loaded onto a forex card, with a limit of USD 3000 equivalent in cash and USD 247000 equivalent on a forex card per traveller.
  • It is advisable to carry 30% of your foreign currency needs in cash and 70% on a forex card.
  • Cash payments for foreign currency are allowed only up to INR 49,999; amounts exceeding this require a bank transfer.
  • Payment for forex should come directly from the traveller’s savings account, not from a third party or from current/NRE/NRO accounts.
  • GST and TCS (if applicable) apply to all forex transactions. Use our GST Calculator & TCS Calculator to determine the exact amounts payable.
  • Check the amount and condition of the currency before leaving the counter or upon delivery.
  • Due to potential availability issues, it is recommended to purchase foreign currency at least 2 weeks before your travel date.
  • Any unspent foreign currency and remaining balance on forex cards can be converted back into INR after your trip at the prevailing exchange rates.
