Foreign Currency Buying/Selling Advisory for Indian Travellers
1. Foreign currency purchase in India is allowed for Resident Indians traveling abroad.
2. Foreign currency can be carried as cash or loaded onto a forex card, with limits of USD 3000 equivalent in cash and USD 247000 equivalent on a forex card per traveller.
3. It is advisable to have 30% of your foreign currency in cash and 70% on a forex card.
4. Cash payments for foreign currency are capped at INR 49,999; higher amounts require a bank transfer.
5. Forex payments must be made from the traveller’s savings account, not from third-party accounts or current/NRE/NRO accounts.

7. Ensure you verify the currency amount and its condition before leaving the counter or at the time of delivery.
8. Due to possible availability issues, it is best to purchase foreign currency at least 2 weeks before your travel date.
9. Any unspent foreign currency and leftover balance on forex cards can be converted back into INR after your trip at the prevailing exchange rates.

1. How much currency can be availed in exchange of cash?
One can buy forex equivalent to 50,000 INR by paying by cash. For amounts higher than 50,000 INR, the amount has to to be transferred to the exchange house's account by NEFT/RTGS. Some provide payment gateway facility also.
2. What are the documents required for getting foreign currency exchange?
For buying foreign currency: Copies of passport, confirmed air ticket and visa.
For selling foreign currency: Any valid photo ID proof such as passport/adhar/voters id/driving license and pan card.
3. Is Pan card necessary for selling forex?
Most money changers insist if the exchange is above INR 25000.
4. How much time will take to deliver the currency?
If the money changer receives the payment before 12 noon, you will get the currency delivered the same day itself. If not the next day.
