How Money Transfer From India to USA Works?

Currency Conversion

In India, personal remittances abroad are processed through SWIFT transfers under RBI’s Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS). Whether you transfer through a bank or an authorised remittance provider, the process is largely the same when an individual sends money abroad for personal purposes.

  1. First, choose a remittance provider. This could be your bank or an authorised remittance provider. This is where you check their exchange rate, service charge, and other applicable fees.
  2. Next, share the beneficiary’s US bank details. This usually includes the account number, bank name, bank address, SWIFT/BIC code, and routing details if required.
  3. Then, submit your KYC documents and supporting documents based on the purpose of transfer, such as education, family maintenance, medical treatment, gift, or any other permitted purpose.
  4. You pay the amount in Indian Rupees from your Indian bank account.
  5. The remittance provider converts the INR amount into USD based on the applicable exchange rate.
  6. The USD amount is sent to the beneficiary’s US bank account through the SWIFT banking network. In some cases, intermediary bank charges may be deducted before the amount reaches the beneficiary.
  7. Depending on the purpose and amount, TCS may apply as per Indian tax rules.
  8. Once processed, the beneficiary receives the money in USD in their US bank account.

Please note: Wire transfers in India are usually processed between 10:30 AM and 2:30 PM, Monday to Friday, except on bank holidays. If your payment reaches the service provider within this time, they may be able to initiate the transfer on the same day.
