Here is what Indian travellers need to know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Also Read: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.extravelmoney.com\/blog\/international-trip-budget\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">How to Calculate Your Budget for a Trip Abroad<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Has Changed With Indian Currency Rules in Nepal?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) issued a notice on 26 July 2026, stating that Indian and Nepalese citizens are allowed to carry Indian currency notes in denominations of \u20b9200 and \u20b9500 that were issued on or after 9 November 2016, with a maximum limit of \u20b925,000 per person in line with the existing regulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indian currency notes in denominations of \u20b9500 and \u20b91,000 that were issued before the demonetisation will still be banned in Nepal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The change removes a restriction that had been in place following India&#8217;s 2016 demonetisation, where travellers could only carry Indian Rupee denominations of or below \u20b9100.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NRB spokesperson Guru Prasad Paudel also clarified that Nepalese citizens are not allowed to bring Indian currency into Nepal from any nation other than India. Additionally, they are prohibited from taking Indian currency from Nepal to a country other than India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Much Indian Currency Can You Carry to Nepal?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Nepal Rastra Bank states that a Nepalese or foreign traveller can bring cash foreign currency (including Indian Rupees) into Nepal up to USD 5,000 or its equivalent without making a customs declaration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Indian and Nepalese nationals can only carry up to \u20b925,000 per person in permitted \u20b9200 and \u20b9500 Indian currency notes when entering or leaving Nepal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, an Indian traveller could carry \u20b920,000 in \u20b9500 notes and \u20b95,000 in \u20b9200 notes, staying within the \u20b925,000 ceiling applicable to these denominations.
