You\u2019ll need it for tips (baksheesh), small spends, and even toilets (often <strong>20 EGP<\/strong>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Carry a <strong>card (Visa card is commonly asked)<\/strong>. Tickets at pyramids\/museums\/archaeological sites are card-only payments<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t come back to India with a lot of leftover EGP. Spend it or convert it back to USD in Egypt<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>So I recently visited Egypt on 17th Jan 2026 for what would be a 8 day trip. Here is what I learned about carrying currency for Egypt trip from India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is Indian Rupee accepted in Egypt?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Nope. <strong>INR is not accepted<\/strong> in Egypt.<br>So don\u2019t go with the idea like \u201cI\u2019ll take some INR and figure it out there\u201d. It won\u2019t work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, buying <strong>EGP outside Egypt<\/strong> (like in India) is not really practical. You\u2019ll be hard pressed to find it in currency exchange centres in India, and even if you do, rates are usually terrible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Best currency to carry from India to Egypt<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the cleanest way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Buy <strong>USD in India<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Carry that to Egypt<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Convert it to <strong>Egyptian Pounds (EGP)<\/strong> after landing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re buying USD in India, you can use <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.extravelmoney.com\/buy-forex\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ExTravelMoney.com<\/a><\/strong> to compare rates from currency exchange stores near you and even get it home delivered. Convert a small amount at the airport<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Airport exchange is convenient, but rate won\u2019t be great. Still, you need some EGP immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So convert <strong>$100\u2013$200<\/strong> to EGP after landing at the airport in Egypt, keep it strictly for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>taxi \/ ride out of airport<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>maybe food\/water<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>first small expenses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Convert the rest in the city<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019re in Cairo or whichever city you\u2019re staying, convert the rest in a <strong>local exchange centre<\/strong>. These shops are not everywhere, you\u2019ll find only a few, but rates are usually much better than the airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Hotel exchange (optional)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Many hotels will convert USD to EGP for you. It\u2019s convenient, yes. Rates are better than airport-level but not as good as a currency exchange centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Avoid scams while exchanging money in Egypt<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I didn\u2019t personally face any scam. But Egypt has a slightly dubious reputation, so better to be alert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you exchange money:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Avoid unofficial money changers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the exchange shop, <strong>count your dollars loudly<\/strong> while handing it over<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When you receive EGP back, <strong>count loudly again<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check notes are good and not damaged<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Only after you\u2019re fully sure, walk out of the shop<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Sounds a bit extra, but this is one of those \u201cdon&#8217;t take a chance\u201d things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Egyptian Pound notes &amp; coins denominations (why change matters)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These are the most commonly used EGP notes you\u2019ll see:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 EGP<\/strong><br>And smaller ones like <strong>1 and 5<\/strong> also exist as coins.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow aligncenter\" data-effect=\"slide\"><div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_container swiper-container\"><ul Tips (Baksheesh)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In Egypt, tips are kind of expected in many places. Hotels, service staff, small help here and there, people will expect <strong>baksheesh<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So carry smaller notes, mainly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>10 EGP<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>20 EGP<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>50 EGP<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Small spends are mostly cash<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Egypt is still a majorly cash economy. For food, drinks, roadside eateries, small shops, it\u2019s mostly cash only.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Tourist toilets can cost 20 EGP<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>This was a surprise for many people. In tourist places, private toilets can be around <strong>20 EGP<\/strong>. So again, small notes save you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Quick INR conversion trick<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>One Egyptian Pound as of today (09 Feb 2026) is <strong>Rs 1.94<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-buttons uagb-buttons__outer-wrap uagb-btn__default-btn uagb-btn-tablet__default-btn uagb-btn-mobile__default-btn uagb-block-bdd8f1b3\"><div class=\"uagb-buttons__wrap uagb-buttons-layout-wrap \">\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-buttons-child uagb-buttons__outer-wrap uagb-block-2d626e5c wp-block-button\"><div class=\"uagb-button__wrapper\"><a class=\"uagb-buttons-repeater wp-block-button__link\" aria-label=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.extravelmoney.com\/currency-converter\/egp-inr\/\" rel=\"follow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"button\"><div class=\"uagb-button__link\">Convert EGP to INR<\/div><\/a><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>So for quick mental math, just do this:<br><strong>EGP amount \u00d7 2 = rough INR<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not exact, but it\u2019s good enough when you\u2019re standing in a shop and trying to understand \u201cis this expensive or not\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And this really helps because souvenir shops near tourist areas usually don\u2019t have price labels. It\u2019s bargaining and whatever you settle on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\"><strong>Please Note:<\/strong> If you are giving big notes for a transaction, make sure you are getting the correct change back. Don't get confused by the Arabic numerals, the face value of the notes will be written in English on the other side.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cash or card in Egypt: what works where<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the reality:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cash<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Cash is the most preferred payment method in Egypt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>small shops<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>street vendors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>taxis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>small restaurants\/roadside eateries<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Mostly cash only.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Credit\/Debit Card<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Cards work in places like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>hotels<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>shopping malls<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>many restaurants<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Forex Card<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>A prepaid forex card loaded with USD is a safer and more economical alternative to cash. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>use it for payments at restaurants, hotels, malls, musuems and the ancient wonders you&#8217;ll visit for entry ticket purchases.
