Depending on your usage, you may select either one or in-fact even open both the accounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span lang=\"EN\">NRE Account<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>NRE or Non-resident External account is for NRIs who wish to save the money they earn abroad in a bank account in India. In an NRE account, you can only deposit foreign currency. This currency will be converted to Indian Rupee at the prevailing exchange rate set by the bank at the time of deposit. The interest earned on your NRE account balance is tax-free. NRI account can be savings, current, recurring or fixed deposits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Advantages of NRE Account<\/em><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you are sending money from abroad to India for long-term savings or for investment. Interest earned on balance in NRE account is free from tax in India.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There is no limit to the amount of money being sent from abroad to NRE account in India.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>NRE account can be held jointly with another NRI.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Disadvantages of NRE Account<\/em><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Monthly minimum balance to be maintained ranges from Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 Lac depending on where your bank branch is (Rural\/Urban).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can\u2019t manage earnings in India in this account as only deposits from foreign countries are accepted.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>NRE account can\u2019t be held jointly with resident Indians (close relative).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Choose an NRE Account if;<\/em>&nbsp;<\/strong>You want to save your money earned abroad in a bank account in India. Since NRE account balance is tax-free this allows you to accrue savings long term for your retirement or investments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span lang=\"EN\">NRO Account<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>NRO or Non-resident Ordinary Rupee account is for NRIs who wish to deposit their rupee earnings in India from rent, interest, and dividends etc. They can also deposit earnings in foreign currency to their NRO account. However, maximum up to $1 million total\/year can only be received in this account. Also, the interest earned on the balance in NRO account is subject to taxation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Please Note:<\/strong> Your rupee earning from India cannot be deposited into NRE account and hence NRO account is needed for that purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Advantages of an NRO Account<\/em><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you want to manage the money you are earning in India through rent, investments etc, you can use an NRO account.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>NRO account can be held jointly with either an NRI or a resident Indian.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Monthly minimum balance to be maintained is Rs 10,000, much lower than NRE account.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Disadvantages of an NRO Account<\/em><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There is a limit to money being received through NRO account. As per the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) signed between India and other countries, a taxpayer abroad need not pay tax again in their home country (India), for sending the same money.
